PAL's Snow Play Day at Leland Snowplay
Make sure you renew your 2023 PAL membership so that your PAL-ticipant can join us for a fun-filled day in the snow at Leland Snowplay park!! This event is open to current PAL members and is FREE to participate in, but we have a limited number of spots so make sure your membership is current before registering. To renew your PAL membership or register as a new member, please complete follow the instructions using this link here. Due to the popularity of this field trip, all sign-ups for this event will automatically be waitlisted and participants will be chosen on a lottery system.
On February 20,2023 PAL will take a field trip to the Leland Snowplay park, which is a snow play park located about 3.5 hours from San Mateo where kids can go tubing, build snowmen, start a snowball fight, and more! All equipment, such as the snow tubes, will be provided.
If your child is chosen to participate, please dress your child warmly and in layers as the weather can vary throughout the day. Transportation will be included with pick-up and drop-off from the San Mateo Police Department (200 Franklin Parkway). Drop-off at SMPD will be at 5:00 AM and pick-up will be at 7:00 PM. Please do not be late as the shuttle buses will be running on a strict schedule to ensure safe and timely transport to the park. Food will not be provided so please pack breakfast and lunch for your child, including water.
Lastly, we'd like to thank the McDonald's Golden Grants Program for sponsoring a portion of the transportation costs for this trip. Their generous donation helped us secure transportation with a safe and reputable company to take our precious PAL kids to the snow!

In every newsletter, we will be spotlighting a PAL staff member or volunteer. Without them, our PAL programs would not be as successful as they are.
This month we are spotlighting:
Amber Shong, Community Services Supervisor
Hello! My name is Amber Shong and I am the Community Services Supervisor for the San Mateo Police Activities League. I am extremely grateful to return to PAL after leaving PAL around 2010 to go work for the King Center and Senior Center.
I was born, raised, and continue to live in the city of San Mateo. My father worked for the City of San Mateo Waste Water Treatment Plant for 39 years and my brother worked for the city for nearly 20 years. I, myself, have worked for the city of San Mateo since 1997 starting out as a recreation specialist and then moving up to a Community services coordinator. I had the opportunity to start my career overseeing a teen hangout which was located in downtown San Mateo. Then at the end of September I received the news that I was being transferred back to PAL. Nervous and excited I began reaching out to several PD staff members and officers that I still had contact with to inform them that I was returning. The welcome return from some familiar faces was absolutely heart felt.
Three things that I hope to bring back or provide to PAL while I am assigned here would be: 1) continue to create opportunities for the community, 2) officer involvement, 3) and helping direct PAL to the next level. I am passionate, dedicated, and 100% a team player. I am extremely grateful for this opportunity and look forward to continuing to connect PD with Rec and with the Community.
