San Mateo PAL Pulse

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
We hope you enjoyed a nice holiday break with your loved ones. Last month was a busy time for Santa, Santa's Workshop, and our PAL office as we held not one, but TWO holiday events for designated PAL families. Santa Brunch is one of our favorite events to host because we get to spend time with our PAL families while spreading holiday cheer. Through generous donations from Safeway, Christensen and Rafferty, and Esposto's Catering we were able to feed and support over 80 families for Santa Brunch, as well as gift them gift cards and jewelry. We served hot scrambled eggs, sausages, and pancakes and it was delicious!
After eating, our kids got to pick a present from Santa's Toy Shop and take photos with Santa. We gifted 750 presents and 30 families received a personal gift card courtesy of Safeway. There was also story time with Mrs. Clause and photo ops with Rookie. It was an awesome experience seeing all the smiles and it reminds us why we do the work that we do!
We'd like to say a huge THANK YOU to all of the staff, volunteers, Board members, and sponsors for supporting us. We could not have done this without you!

News and Updates
Santa Cop

In addition to Santa Brunch, we were able to support several PAL families that we felt could use some extra holiday cheer this holiday season. Santa Cop is an event where SMPD Officers will identify families they have worked with throughout the year and we gift those kids and their parents a few items that we know will make them smile. Santa Cop has been an SMPD long-standing tradition and we hope to keep it going for many years to come!
Thank you to everyone who helped with Santa Cop. From wrapping presents to delivering them directly to the families...thanks for making this experience possible.

Thank you to our Police Explorers!
We'd like to take this time to also recognize our Explorers for all of their amazing work and commitment to serving the community of San Mateo.
We appreciate your hard work and dedication to every PAL event and/or community event that we ask you to help with. Keep up the great work!

Lt. Kimber Joyce
In every newsletter, we will be spotlighting a PAL staff member or volunteer. Without them, our PAL programs would not be as successful as they are.
This month we are spotlighting:
Lt. Kimber Joyce, Youth Services Bureau
Lieutenant Kimber Joyce was born and raised in the Bay Area. She attended college at the University of California, Berkeley where she played collegiate level sports and graduated with honors with a degree in Psychology. After college, Kimber began her career teaching children with learning disabilities. Kimber joined the San Mateo Police Department in 2004 as a Police Officer and was promoted to Police Sergeant in 2011. During her time as an officer she worked in the Investigations Bureau as the Juvenile Detective where she worked with at risk youth and child victims. After being promoted to Sergeant, Kimber supervised the Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) which is a highly proactive team that combats gang, narcotic and vice related activity. CRU also aimed to identify high risk youth in the community to get them connected to our Youth Diversion, Prevention and PAL programs. In January 2018, Kimber was assigned to supervise the Youth Services Unit which oversees our Police Activities League (PAL), Youth Diversion, Police Explorer Program and the School Resource Officers. Kimber was promoted to Lieutenant in 2021 and continues to manage PAL and the Youth Services Unit programs.
