PAL Prevention + Intervention
Prevention is an alternative program for juvenile offenders. The goal is to divert each selected offender from further criminal behavior. The Juvenile Detective oversees this program with the assistance of PAL staff, a county probation officer and a Case Worker from YSB.
The San Mateo Police Department is committed to keeping youth out of the juvenile justice system whenever possible. Research shows that early involvement in the justice system can increase the risk of future criminal activity, school truancy, and dropping out.
Our Juvenile Prevention Program serves youth ages 11–17 who have committed a minor offense or are at risk based on concerning behaviors. Referrals from officers, schools, and families are reviewed by the Juvenile Detective, who develops an individualized plan tailored to each youth and their family's needs. Plans may include school attendance goals, counseling, connections to community resources, and community service to promote accountability and long-term success.
By providing youth and families with the tools to strengthen communication and improve family dynamics, the program helps create lasting positive outcomes. Youth are supported in staying in school, maintaining or improving academic performance, and making positive choices while resisting influences such as gang recruitment, crime, bullying, and other behaviors that contributed to their at-risk status.
Through mentorship, accountability, and support, youth develop a renewed interest in their education and learn to set goals for a successful future—both personally and professionally. Families also play an important role by committing to the process, strengthening relationships, and improving interactions among all family members. The results have been overwhelmingly positive and demonstrate the program’s meaningful impact on youth and families.
